Elastrography, may Call the Shots During Initial Stage of Breast Screening

The findings reported from a small-scale study conducted recently, about better screening methods for breast cancer, was presented this week.

The findings reported from a small-scale study conducted recently, about better screening methods for breast cancer, was presented this week at the Radiological Society of North America's yearly meeting in Chicago.

The breast screening method envisaged, termed as elastrography, would be capable of distinguishing between harmless and malignant lumps in women’s breasts. This method of screening holds promise in the better utilization of breast biopsies, currently in use to detect the presence of breast cancer.

Biopsies are rather costly and cumbersome; additionally the results may take days or weeks. Statistics show that eight out of 10 biopsies are not malignant. This being the case, elastrography could be helpful in the first stage of screening, to ascertain if the cancer exists, and then move on to the next stage of evaluating the malignancy.
