A recent study had suggested that an increasing waistline, along with the elevated levels of triglycerides may be a strong predictor for atherogenesis and cardiac problems for post menopausal women.
The study had looked into 557 women for 8.5 yrs to estimate the risk of cardiovascular mortality and the progression rate atherogenesis. Atherogenesis is the process of plaques etc forming in the inner lining of the arteries that make them hard causing a state of atherosclerosis. This causes disturbed blood flow and may cause serious damage to heart.The study done by researchers from Denmark say that women who had suffered from cardiac diseases had previously not been forewarned because of lack of predictive factors. It is now possible to predict the cardiac health of post menopausal women through their level of triglycerides and increased waistline. Enlarged waist with elevated triglycerides (EWET) was successfully linked in the study with increased risk for atherogenesis, cardiac problems or even fatal cardiac attacks.
Researchers feel that this tool EWET may be successfully used as a diagnostic test for the primary health centers to decide on the health of women who are past their menopause.
