Kerala’s Ernakulam will become the first district in India to be completely smoke free with the administration expected to ban all tobacco products in the district. Excise minister K Babu revealed that the chief minister, Oommen Chandy has also sent a letter to the prime minister asking the central government to ban pan masala in the state. Steps are also being taken to curb the availability of alcohol drinks.
“State government has also decided not to open new outlets of Beverages Corporation in the state. The government will not give bar license to three-star hotels from March 31. The licenses of four -star hotels will be renewed for one more year. From next year onwards, license will be issued to five star hotels only”, Babu said.
