Ethnic Malays, Indians Sought as Bone Marrow Donors

Ethnic Malays and Indians are being sought as bone morrow donors in Singapore.

Singapore: Ethnic Malays and Indians are being sought as bone morrow donors in Singapore, officials said Saturday.

The target is to add 5,000 potential donors to the Bone Marrow Donor Programme (BMDP) registry.

'The odds for a bone marrow match from an unrelated donor of the same ethnic group is one in 20,000,' BMDP president Jane Prior told the Strait Times.

The group recruited 5,000 donors last year, mostly Chinese.

The BMDP signed an agreement with China last September allowing it to draw on a pool of 500,000 donors for bone marrow transplants.

The predominantly Chinese city-state's population is 14 percent Muslim Malays and six percent Indians.
