Exercise Could Reduce Risk Of Colon Cancer In Men

Aerobic exercise has the potential to reduce the risk of colon cancer and colon polyps in men, a new study by US researchers says. Lead researcher Dr. Anne McTiernan of Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center studied 102 men and 100 women aged 40-75 years.

WebMD reports that half the participants were asked to exercise, while the rest were not. Neither group had any change in their diets. Men who exercised showed less cancer-cell growth compared to men who did not. No such difference was observed in women.

"Vigorous exercise was helpful for men of any size, as long as they worked out nearly every day. It’s not a finding that we really wanted to see in women," McTiernan said. The study appears in the September edition of the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.
