Expert Says MMR Jab Must be Made Compulsory

Sir Sandy Macara, former chairman of the British Medical Association, is proposing that children must not be allowed to start school unless they have been vaccinated against measles

Sir Sandy Macara, former chairman of the British Medical Association, is proposing that children must not be allowed to start school unless they have been vaccinated against measles, mumps and rubella.

This suggestion comes on the heels of reports that measles cases in the UK have soared alarmingly with 253 cases reported so far. Recently the Welsh health minister also expressed concern over these events and said she would consider making vaccination compulsory.

"The suggestion is that we ought to consider making a link which in effect would make it compulsory for children to be immunized if they are to receive the benefit of a free education from the state," said Macara.

The London strategic health authority had sought the government's suggestion on whether to make vaccination compulsory, but was told that voluntary immunization systems will remain in place for now.
