Most hospitals cry out for organ donations, saying more people need to help out in this matter. But at the G G Hospital in Jamnagar, it was a different tale as 20 donated eyes went waste as they reportedly did not arrive on time.
The parcels containing 20 donated eyes were delivered by Patel Tours and Travels around 8 pm. When reporters still found them lying on the billing counter at 2 am, the contacted hospital authorities, who admitted there was a delay in the arrival of the consignment, which meant the eyes had all crossed their expiry dates. The biggest civil hospital in Saurashtra was receiveing the eyes from the Jain Oswal Mahajan Samaj in Gandhidham in Kutch.
“For corneal transplants, the eyes can be preserved up to 72 hours at the most. The first donation was done on June 3, while the last was done on June 26. Even the last donation had passed the expiry date,” said Dr B D Gupta, Medical Superintendent, G G Hospital. He added that they had not requested the trust to send them any eyes.
“We had neither any transplant case at the hospital nor was such a requirement placed. The parcel was unexpected,” said Dr Gupta.
