17 packets of counterfeit condoms of Durex best-selling 'extra safe' range were seized in west London by British authorities.

A Durex spokeswoman stated that the company could not 'guarantee the safety' of the fakes. The number of these fakes that were on sale in UK was also unknown These counterfeits came to light only after three customers complained to Durex. When tests were conducted at the company's laboratories it was confirmed that these were fakes.

Replica boxes with the code 20604354 were printed on its base. Durex spokeswoman said these fakes could be identified by their smaller size, dotted surface and a fruity smell.

According to Durex the fake condoms would not have been tested for microscopic holes, and there was a risk they might split.

Durex is working closely with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to track the source of the counterfeits.

The spokeswoman said, 'They don't meet our high standards. We can't guarantee their safety.'

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said: 'Counterfeit condoms ... cannot be considered to provide adequate protection against sexually transmitted infection or pregnancy.'

Durex is advising anyone who fears they may already have done so to contact their local pharmacy, GP or family planning clinic. Last March Durex had ordered a major recall after counterfeit condoms were discovered.

The agency said it was working with Durex's parent company SSL International to track down the fakes.
