The ingredients of tattoo ink have come under the spotlight following a recent study which found the presence of toxic chemicals such as phthalates, hydrocarbons and metals which can cause cancer. Of particular concern is a black tattoo ink called benzo(a)prene, a powerful carcinogen which has been known to cause skin cancer during animal tests.
This has spurred the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to initiate an investigation into the safety of tattoos to ascertain if tattoos can actually cause cancer.
