Fear Over Maple Leaf Meat Being Contaminated

Canada's Maple Leaf recalls meats, as it fears tampering due to the syringe casings found at Ontario plant on Sunday.

Canada's largest meat processor, Maple Leaf Foods, on Tuesday decided to recall its ham and turkey products, as it doubted tampering of its meat products with an unknown contaminant.

The incident took place on Sunday night when Maple Leaf Employees found syringe casings at the company's plant in Kitchener, Ontario., after which Maple Leaf notified the Federal agency and CFIA's food safety officer, Garfield Balsom took up the case. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) along with Maple Leaf had called in the Police to investigate on this case.

At a press conference held by the company it was announced that there were no tampered meat products found so far and no illnesses reported nation wide. Mr. Balsom told the press he was not at liberty to comment about the volume of meat being recalled or about the syringe test. He did however confirm that there was an internal investigation being held with the help of the police.

However, as a precaution step, the company and federal agency have passed on several warnings to the public to avoid the nationally distributed products.
