Women who are more career oriented end up having “nominal” families and the current gender pay gap only exists because many women choose to look after their families, a new report by a leading female academic reveals. Dr Catherine Hakim , who is a senior research fellow at the London School of Economics, writes that more than half of the women who currently occupy a senior position at work are child free while the majority of the remaining hire other workers to look after their family.
The report comes after recent figures show that women under the age of 30 years are not at a disadvantage with regards to the gender pay gap and many women accept the gap in order to look after their families.
“In Britain half of all women in senior positions are child-free, and a lot more of them have nominal families with a single child and they subcontract out the work of caring for them to other women”, Dr Hakim said.
Dr Hakim went on to urge the government to drop the policy of “social engineering” for women, adding that many women do not aspire for the same pay or ambitions as men. However she was quick to point out that there is no difference between men and women managers and that the efficiency is the result of hard work by either sex.
