In a path breaking idea researchers at the just concluded Indian science congress in New Delhi have called for a collaborative effort with agricultural scientists to combat anemia with iron fortification of crops. Almost 50% of women and 75% children under 3 years of age are anemic in India. While iron supplementation is expensive, fortification of plants with iron and using it in turn to fight anemia in people is fairly cheaper, scientists say.

This idea has found a lot of enthusiastic support amidst the scientific community. Certain genes have been identified in plants, which are helpful in accumulating iron in them, and they can be used to fight anemia in humans.

Senior scientists at the Indian agricultural research institute, Delhi say that the technology is already in vogue in the developed countries and this would be a boon to developing countries if they can develop their own technology to improve upon this idea. This way they say the huge problem posed by anemia in India can be checked very well. Looks like our scientists are taking the bull by its horns… lets hope they succeed!!
