The ceramic sternum can improve bio-compatibility, and reduce infection and rejection by the immune system, compared to the titanium and cement alternatives.
Doctors in France have successfully carried out the world’s first transplant of a ceramic sternum, revealed the product’s makers, I.CERAM. The operation was carried out on March 19, 2015, at the University Hospital Center in Limoges, central France, on a woman in her fifties who had been diagnosed with cancer. I.CERAM is a nine-year-old company, which specializes in orthopedic implants. The company said, "At the three-month point, the operation is a success. The patient has received a new, healthy sternum and her respiratory capacity is improving."
The ceramic breastplate is aimed at improving bio-compatibility, reducing infection and rejection by the immune system, compared with the titanium and cement alternatives.
