Taking fish oil capsules during pregnancy may protect your baby from eczema.
Taking fish oil capsules during pregnancy may protect your baby from eczema, according to scientists at the Adelaide University.Tests of 700 pregnant women with a family history of eczema showed that children whose mothers had taken Omega-3 supplements during pregnancy, were 1/3rd less likely to develop the dry-skin condition, compared with women who took a placebo.
Scientists believe that Omegap-3 fatty acids passed on via the placenta, affect the unborn baby's immune system which protects against eczema.
Lead author of the study Maria Makrides said, "The fatty acids of the oil may get incorporated into cell membranes inside the fetus, where they dampen down the inflammation that leads to allergies and eczema."
