Popping fish oil capsules will not accelerate weight loss in obese people who are already dieting and exercising.
Popping fish oil capsules will not accelerate weight loss in obese people who are already dieting and exercising, suggests a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Scientists found that at a diet and exercise program, obese adults who were given omega-3 fatty acids did not lose more weight than those given placebo capsules. To investigate this the researchers randomly picked up 128 obese men and women to take 5 fish oil capsules (i.e. 3grams of omega-3 fatty acids) or 5 placebo capsules every day for 24 weeks. Participants were also asked to do aerobic exercises for 150 minutes a week and strength exercises for about 20 -30 minutes twice a week.
The people who took fish oil capsules lost 5.2 kilograms (11.5 pounds), while those who took the placebo capsules lost 5.8 kilograms (13 pounds). This was not a statistically significant difference. There was no difference between both the groups in measures of heart disease risk, like blood pressure and cholesterol levels. However, researchers have stated that the omega-3 blood levels in the fish oil group increased to a level that has positive cardiovascular effects.
