Florence Nightingales of India Honored by President

Seventeen nurses were honored by President of India on the International Nurse’s Day in N.Delhi

National Awards for Nurses are given as a mark of highest recognition for the meritorious services of the nurses and nursing profession in the country.

Till the year 1989, 31 awards were allocated (18 for Nurses, 10 for Auxiliary Nurse Midwives and 3 for Lady Health Visitors).

National Awards for Nurses are given as a mark of highest recognition for the meritorious services of the nurses and nursing profession in the country. However, this Award could not be continued and has been revived from this year. One award is earmarked for each State/Union Territory subject to the availability of nursing personnel with meritorious services. Each award carries a Certificate of Merit and Cash award of Rs.50, 000/-.

Nurses have a very vital role to play in the patient care service in a hospital. Their role is, indeed, noble and invaluable. They provide succor and relief to the patients at all times and particularly in times of need.

Nursing Services in India have expanded considerably since Independence. Along with this expansion a diversification in nursing services in the medical care field has also taken place.

Great imbalances in the manpower situation can be noticed as far as nursing is concerned. As compared to the developed countries, the nurse's population ratio in India is not adequate. In India there is one nurse to 2250 people while in the developed countries the number of people served by one-nurse ranges from 150 to 200. Even developing countries like Indonesia, Kenya, Sri Lanka and Thailand have a better nurse population ratio. The nurse patient ratio, however, varies from 1:5 to 1:60 or 1:1000 in different institutions.

Today, on the occasion of birthday of Florence Nightingale, Hon'ble President of India presented the Awards to17 Awardees selected by the Central Selection Committee. This day is celebrated all over the world as "International Nurses Day."
