Atopic dermatitis is seen very frequently among children. It is one of the diseases which are very difficult to manage in children below 3 months of age. Hence Dr. Lawrence S. Eichenfield from Children's Hospital and Health Center-San Diego and colleagues came up with the fluticasone lotion. In the lotion form it spreads easily and has a cooling effect. The moisturization and low irritancy are an added advantage of the lotion when compared to ointments and creams. It is very helpful against extensive disease and to use in difficult to treat areas. It may be safely used as short-term treatment of eczema. The authors have published the work in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. The researchers investigated the efficacy and safety of the fluticasone 0.05 percent lotion when applied once daily in 438 children.

These children who were at least 3 months of age with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis were given the lotion for daily application. The treatment success rate was 76% which shows a significantly higher value when compared with the placebo lotion which is around 36 %. There were no side effects such as skin changes and no clinically significant abnormalities detected in laboratory tests. The experiment went on for a period of one month and the safety and effectiveness of the lotion were not assessed for long periods of use. Hence in conclusion the author says that these lotions are very effective against atopic dermatitis in children for a short period of time.
