The hospital dismissed allegations of negligence in treatment or the possibility of infection. It said that the babies died due to under-nourished mothers.
Media reports claimed that eight newborn babies had lost their lives at the government medical hospital in Villupuram, Tamil Nadu. However, a senior official confirmed that only four babies have died owing to health complications. Dr. Usha Sadasivam, dean of government Villupuram medical hospital, said, "Four pre-term babies lost their lives due to health complications. It is wrong to say eight babies died. The babies were under-weight. The mothers’ ages were in the range of 18-27 and were largely under-nourished. As a preventive measure, the expecting mothers are advised to consult doctors well in advance on having a proper nutritious diet."
Dr. Sadasivam refuted the possibilities of any infections or negligence in treatment.
