Around 175 patients from the low income group underwent free angioplasty at the Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research in Bangalore. NRI doctors, Dr G. Subramani and Dr Devaraj from the United States conducted the surgeries over a period of just six days with the institute director, Dr CN Manjunath, praising the generosity of NRI donors who donated stents and balloons worth over Rs 1.5 crore while the institute chipped in with Rs 50 lakhs.
Dr Manjunath went on to add that most of the surgeries were complicated with more than half of the patients suffering from Diabetes which increases the risk during any kind of surgery.
Dr Subramani expressed his concern over the younger generation in the country with more than 20 percent of the patients below 40 years of age. “Compared to US, obesity is not prominent among Indian patients. But still, youngsters here are suffering from cardiac ailments. It is better if the patients become vegetarians or completely stop consuming red meat”, he added.
