Reports of five deaths after consumption of abortion pill cause concern to women consuming Mifeprex.

Danco Laboratories has given warnings to all physicians regarding the latest reports of death of 5 women after taking their companies abortion pill RU-486. The pill is also called as Mifeprex or Mifepristone. Mifeprex is an approved drug for terminating a pregnancy of 49 days or less. The drug was introduced in the market five years ago. The drug RU-486 is taken two days after taking Mifeprex to complete the abortion drug schedule. Though, Danco has said “No causal relationship between these events has been found”, the manufacturers are alerting all the physicians who are prescribing Mifeprex about this recently reported case and the manufacturers are updating the details of the new risk factors in their drug’s label for the information of the consumers. These warnings may help the patients to report immediately if they experience abdominal pain, discomfort or general malaise for more than 24 hours after taking Mifeprex immediately to the emergency room. Though, these are very rare infections, early detection can help effective treatment.

Mifeprex already carries a warning about the possibility that women who take the drug could experience serious and sometimes fatal infections. The company is updating the label to give physicians more information to help them spot the problem, Danco spokeswoman Cynthia Summers said. People opposing abortion have asked the FDA to asking FDA to withdraw the drug Mifeprex. For the past 5 years in U.S. more than 460,000 women are taking Mifeprex.

In the five deaths reported due to Mifeprex since 2000. Three of the five deaths were caused by a rare bacterium Clostridium sordellii. One death occurred during the clinical trial of the drug in Canada in 2001. The other four was also reported in Canada, 2 deaths occurred in late 2003, one occurred in early 2004 and the last one in mid-2005. Three of the cases involved a rare bacterium known as Clostridium sordellii, Danco's statement said. "Childbirth, menstruation and abortion, whether spontaneous, surgical or medical, all create conditions that can result in serious and sometimes fatal infection, and there is no evidence that Mifeprex and Misoprostol present a special risk of infection," the company said in a statement.
