Peter Roebuck's close friend, Christopher Pearson, has revealed how the cricket writer fought an "erotic element" in his feelings towards teenage boys.
Roebuck, 55 who killed himself in South Africa last weekend after police questioned him over a gay rape accusation.

A student had earlier claimed that Roebuck groomed him before sexually assaulting him.

Roebuck "made no attempt to conceal the fact there was sometimes a heavily sublimated erotic element in his feelings towards his proteges," Weekend Australian newspaper quoted Pearson, as saying.

Pearson also revealed how Roebuck fought with depression, The Daily Telegraph reports.

"For his readers and those who tuned in regularly to his broadcasts, Roebuck's life must have seemed an enviable one," Pearson writes.

"Yet, despite his air of good humour, urbanity and bravado, he was dogged by depression and laboured under great difficulties," he added. Pearson said Roebuck's suicide cannot be regarded as an admission of guilt.

"While his accuser can say whatever he likes, we'll never know what Roebuck thought was happening. It's simplistic and unjust to assume his suicide was a guilty plea to every charge now being made against him," he said.
