Gene to identify risk of stroke in sickle cell anemia

Sickle cell anemia is one of the sickle cell disease. A sickle cell disease is often inherited. Sickle cell anemia is the condition where there is anemia and sickle cell hemoglobin is produced.

Scientists have analyzed 235 variants of 80 genes in 1398 patients suffering from sickle cell anemia. The results of the study was the development of a model that could predict the genetic factors and other factors that lead to incidence of stroke in sickle cell anemia. The researchers used transcranial Doppler ultrasonography for screening cerebral vasculopathy. Then the Bayesian networks are used to generate the clinical models. The model was successful in predicting the 25 variants of 11 genes that increased the risk of stroke in such a condition. Some of the genes were those already identified as related to risk of stroke. The others thus identified are genes in the pathway TGF-beta, as well as hemoglobin levels of the patients.

The current study shows that stroke is complex phenomena will strong genetical influence.
