A tumor weighing 15 kg was removed from a Kolkata resident's abdomen on October 20th.

Fifty five year old Monir Alam , employed with the Defence Ministry, did not imagine in his wildest dreams that his abdomen was home to a 15 kg tumour for close to a year.

For many months Monir Alam experienced an uncomfortable feeling in his abdomen, mostly feeling ‘inflated’.

A CT scan was conducted which showed the presence of a dangerously huge tumour growing in three different directions.

A six hour surgery was conducted at the Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI) on October 20th.   Surgical gastroenterologist Sanjay De Bakshi , who led the team said, “Such a large tumour is very rare and could have proved fatal if it was allowed to grow for some more time.”

The tumour was also dangerously exerting pressure on the organs to the right.

“His right kidney, appendix, right side of the large intestine, small intestine and the main aorta were pressed to the left. The pressure could have seriously damaged the organs,” explained Dr.Bakshi.

Alam has made a speedy recovery and will soon be discharged from the hospital.
