Girl in Coma After Being Hit on the Head by Teacher

A 15-year-old girl in the Indian capital of New Delhi is in a coma for more than a month after being hit on the head with a stick by her teacher.

Corporal punishments in Indian schools are assuming extremely disturbing proportions. A 15-year-old girl is in coma for over a month now after she received a vicious knock on her head from her teacher, say her parents.

And what was the provocation? Nothing more than that she would not attend tuition classes conducted by the teacher.

Tuition classes are money-spinning propositions and in many cases students are coerced into attending them.

Rinky Kaushik, a resident of Mayur Vihar, a New Delhi suburb, has been lying at the ICU of Maharaja Agrasen Hospital at Punjabi Bagh since January 7.  She has now missed her Board examinations.

Doctors attending on her told Times of India that Rinky had to be operated on for removing a clot in her head and her condition continued to be critical. They added that Rinky developed a nerve disorder after a motorcycle accident five years back and the current head injury had aggravated that problem. Doctors were, however, hopeful of her recovery.

Rinky’s parents claim Dhirendra Kumar Dinkar, a teacher at Dinkar National Model School in east Delhi, repeatedly hit their daughter with a stick on November 10 last year when she refused to attend his tuition classes.

The accused is the son of the school principal, and Rinky’s father, Naresh Kaushik, claims he has been receiving threats to withdraw the complaint against the teacher.

Rinky’s parents approached the cops on November 15, but the New Ashok Nagar police registered a case against the teacher under Sections 325 (voluntarily causing hurt), 342 (wrongful confinement) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code only on Feb 12

Not so long ago, an Ahmedabad student died after being punished for coming late.

Despite clear instructions from the Centre to all state government  to clamp a ban on  corporal punishments in educational institutions, such cases are on the rise.

Isn't it high time the teachers were strictly told to spare the rod? One wonders.
