Reports say India has urged Western countries to stop eating beef in order to cut greenhouse emissions.
According to a report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, 18 per cent of the Earth's greenhouse gas emissions are due to livestock.Environment minister Jairam Ramesh insists giving up beef can drastically reduce emissions and slow down global warming.
"The solution to cut emissions is to stop eating beef. It leads to emission of methane which is 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide," the Telegraph quoted him as saying.
"The best thing for us, India, is we are not a beef-eating nation," he added.
