A new study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology suggests that indulging in gossiping is not a bad habit and instead has some benefits with regard to stress provided it is the right kind of gossip. The study was conducted by researchers at University of California in Berkeley and included 51 volunteers who took part in four different experiments involving games in which the participants cheated.
The researchers found that those participants who gossiped managed to overcome their frustrations and were less stressed compared to those who did not gossip.
“Passing on the gossip note ameliorated their negative feelings and tempered their frustration. Gossiping made them feel better”, study co-author Robb Willer said.
