Eat fruits and vegetables, but don't forget whole grains, if you want to cut your risk for heart and blood vessel disease and cancer, researchers say. Fruits and vegetables especially cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage - can reduce stroke risk by about 32%.

According to a study of a group of 65,000 women, those who ate the equivalent of two to three slices of whole-grain bread each day were 30% to 40% less likely to have an ischemic (blocked artery)or stroke than women who ate the equivalent of less than half a slice each day.Out of a group of 34,000 adults, those who ate the most whole grains had a 23% lower risk of dying from heart and blood vessel disease, and a 21% lower risk of dying from cancer.

The first item listed should be whole-wheat flour, rolled oats, cracked wheat or steel cut wheat or oats. Other whole-grain foods include: whole-wheat pasta, oatmeal, whole-grain cereal, popcorn, wheat germ, brown rice, quinoa, bulgur wheat and wheat berries.
