When scientists subjected about 79 women to growth hormone replacement therapy they noted that patients with the greatest abdominal fat loss had the greatest increases in bone formation. Also, patients with the greatest increases in vitamin D had the greatest increases in bone formation. Women with maximum abdominal fat loss had greater increases in bone formation.
The results of this study suggest new treatment possibilities for obesity-related bone loss. But high cost of growth hormone replacement therapy can limit its widespread use.
The research was presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).
