To prevent obesity and metabolic syndrome among Indians, look no further than the recently released guidelines, a combined effort of the Diabetics Foundation of India, The health ministry and many national health organizations, tailored to suit Indian conditions.

Elaborating on the need for an India specific obesity prevention rule book, Dr Anoop Misra, director and head, department of diabetes and metabolic diseases, Fortis Hospitals, said, “Indians have a very different body, genetic and metabolic composition from westerners. Therefore, the parameters for obesity also have to be very different. This will bring more people under the overweight and obesity bracket. The revised guidelines would benefit 6 to 8 crore people. That in turn would lead to substantial prevention of diabetes and heart disease."

These new guidelines will soon be published in prominent Indian journals, so the public has access to them.

Considering that India is called the diabetic capital of the world, with increasing numbers of overweight people, the guidelines may prove to be a blessing to halt the growing trend.
