The season of the dreaded H1N1 virus appears to be in full flow in the country after it claimed the life of a one-year-old on Sunday. Swine flu or the H1N1 virus has so far claimed 62 lives in Maharashtra since April this year. Dr Preeti Shanbag of Sion hospital said the child was brought in on Thursday evening, “The boy was gasping for breath so we did not want to waste anytime and put him on a course of Tamiflu,’’ she added. “We got his reports by Saturday evening that confirmed the presence of the H1N1 virus. But, his condition had already deteriorated by then.’’
Taniflu appears to work best if administered within 48 hours after infection. The boy, who was a a resident of Dharavi, had been apparently infected five days prior to his admission to the hospital.
