Harmful Chemical in Fruit Juices may Cause Cancer

A number of popular fruit juice drinks in the Europe contain harmful chemicals which can lead to cancer, a new research published in the Journal of Environmental Monitoring reveals.

According to the study carried out by a group of researchers from the University of Copenhagen, at least 16 of the more popular brands available in the market contain an average of 2.5 times the levels of antimony suggested by the EU guidelines with some of the drinks containing as much as 10 times the level that is deemed safe by the EU.

The researchers suggested that the chemical could be leaching from the plastic containers that contain the fruit juice. Claus Hansen, who took part in the study, said that while no legislation has been broken, the high levels of the chemical are certain to be harmful to the body.

The antimony concentrations in the products tested exceed the limit of drinking water but no legalization exists for foodstuffs so no legislation has been broken. However we cannot be sure that the antimony levels are harmless”, he said.
