He Stole Mobile Phones, Messaged Strangers Seeking Friendship

An Indian engineer’s relentless quest for female company drove him to theft of mobile phones and message strangers. He is now in jail.

Conservative sexual attitudes can do strange things, it is known. In the latest instance an Indian mechanical engineer finds himself behind bars thanks to some ingenious methods he adopted in his ceaseless quest for the company of girls.

New Delhi police said Saturday that the 30-year-old Vivek Kanwat would sneak into his neighbours’ houses and steal mobile phones of college girls. He then scanned the phones’ contact list and took down numbers of other girls. He also got numbers from the MTNL website and social networking sites.

Thus he built up a formidable directory of more than 20,000 phone numbers of girls from Delhi, Chennai, Gorakhpur and Bangalore.

The next step was to call them up one after another, at all odd hours, and press for their friendship. And when the girls refused, he would call up the girls’ parents and neighbours saying the girls were prostitutes.

Obviously such blackmailing didn’t yield any rewards either. He then took revenge by posting ‘indecently morphed’ photographs of the girls ‘who were playing truant’ on a prominent social networking site. He would also furnish their mobile nos. This is the first such case of harassment involving the internet in India and he had stalked more than 100 college girls for sometime.

Initiating investigation into the complaints of harassment pouring in, a special team of the Crime Branch closely monitored the calls to the victims and traced them to Bokaro in the north central state of Jharkhand and Shalimar Bagh in New Delhi.

Only recently Kanwat had joined the Bokaro Steel Plant as a trainee engineer but had been a long time resident of Shalimar Bagh. At least 75 of his victims were from Shalimar Bagh.
