The traditional medicine market will be worth $5 trillion in 40 years, Ramadoss said at the opening of a three-day fair of traditional systems 'Arogya 2006' at the Chennai trade Fair Centre in the city outskirts."Today 25 percent of medicines used in the US are from traditional systems and include plant-based drugs," he added.
Patenting problems for Indian herbs and medicinal plants and products occur "because NRIs (non-resident Indians) in the US are patenting these as their own and not as India's".
Worldwide research was on to integrate modern systems of medicine with the local systems like ayurveda, yunani, yoga and naturopathy, he said.
"In India, every primary health centre will soon have one Indian system practitioner, with one modern system practitioner."
However, validation of products will be followed very strictly, the minister said. The onus will be on manufacturers to safeguard products, ensure that banned heavy metals are not there and all ingredients of classical formulations are mentioned on the bottles.
