Health Minister Stresses the Importance of Realistic Health Targets

A recent communiqué had reported that nearly three fourth of hospitals in Canada may not be able to achieve the estimated one-month target of completing radiation therapy to prostate cancer patients.

A recent communiqué had reported that nearly three fourth of hospitals in Canada may not be able to achieve the estimated one-month target of completing radiation therapy to prostate cancer patients.

As a reaction to this report, Federal Health Minister Tony Clement came down heavily on so-called benchmarks and targets set to achieve healthcare milestones, which according to him are akin to castles built in the air. To achieve the targets, it is important that targets also have fall back options to make-up for unexpected delays.

The minister has however assured best efforts to improve the waiting times for patients.
