The New Zealand government is turning the lens towards workplace cafeterias and vending machines, to understand the nature of food and snack items doled out! With a surge in the levels of obesity, this is certainly called for, to check the obvious fallout of unhealthy eating – lifestyle diseases.
The Ministry of Health will keep an eye on the cafeterias and vending machines for the next two years to ascertain the types of food enabled to people at their workplaces.Deputy Director of Health Don Matheson has informed that the Ministry will collate the data on price, availability and the marketing strategy adopted by the various food brands, which will be used to educate people about nutrition and healthy eating habits.
Though this not an indication of an impending legislation on cafeterias, the ministry will enable guidelines for the workplace cafeterias, to encourage healthy eating and reduce levels of obesity.
