Healthier Milk from Organically Reared Cows: Study

A new study by the University of Newcastle has said that organically reared cows that eat fresh grass are more likely to provide healthier milk.

A new study by the University of Newcastle has said that organically reared cows that eat fresh grass are more likely to provide healthier milk. Researchers at the Danish Institute for Agricultural Science also collaborated on this study.

The study says that omega-3 and conjugated linoleic acid known as CLA9 , which are essential fatty acids, are present in higher levels in this milk rather than in milk produced at commercial dairy farms.

“Our work has not looked at the impact on human health, but I would say organic milk should be better for health from what we know of the benefits of these good fatty acids," said lead author Gillian Butler, livestock project manager for the university's Nafferton Ecological Farming Group. “They are effective in combating cancer, coronary heart disease and type II diabetes.”

The details of the study appear in the Journal of Science of Food and Agriculture.
