Coca-Cola launches a new calculator that is expected to figure out how long it takes to burn off the calories in a can of the cola.
If you’re someone gulping down a can of coke every time you feel like it, here’s some news. Coca-Cola UK has just launched a new ‘Work it Out’ calculator that apparently determines the amount of exercise you may require to burn off the calories you just got in with your standard 330ml coke can. This calculator suggests half an hour of easy to moderate walking to burn off the calories from a can of coke. And it doesn’t end here. The calculator determines the time taken to burn off the calories from the drinks of the company’s other brands as well. So now you know that it could take you 18 minutes of zumba class or 73 minutes of ironing to burn off the calories after consuming a can of Sprite and 16 minutes of aerobics or 20 minutes of moderate walking to burn off the calories in Fanta orange (98 calories).
Also, it shows that ‘healthier’ drinks like Glaceau Vitamin Water Essential would require approximately 13 minutes of cycling or 19 minutes of vacuuming to be fully used up. For women who dread household work, music can make it bearable. Play a fast-paced song and clean up the room, burning calories on the go.
Although the Coca-Cola Company has certainly faced criticism in the past for addition of carcinogenic food coloring and not responding to health concerns, it has sure managed to catch the attention of a major portion of the public, especially diet-conscious people. According to the calorie-burning chart in the calculator, a can of caffeine free diet coke does not need any exercising since it contains only 0.5 calories. However, there is no information on the health impacts of aspartame (sweetener) used in the ‘diet’ drinks.
Another downside is, it fails to mention the sugar content in its full-fat products.
The Work it Out calculator was developed by Coca-Cola in association with with Dr Greg Whyte, the authority on Exercise Physiology and Sports Performance and Rehabilitation in the UK, ‘to highlight some of the unusual, fun and interesting ways you can achieve energy balance’. But that said, a can of coke containing around 39g of sugar, which is close to half of the daily 90g recommended for women, can not exactly be included in the list of everyday healthy indulgences!
Here are the top 10 ways you can burn off the calories after downing a can of coke equivalent to 139 calories.
• Walking for 30 minutes
• Moving the lawn for 21 minutes
• A 11-minute game of squash
• 70 minutes of vacuuming
• A game of table tennis for 34 minutes
• Climbing the stairs for 19 minutes
• Ballroom dancing for 45 minutes
