AI's application in mental healthcare includes personal sensing, natural language processing, and chatbots. While some mundane tasks can be delegated to AI to free up time for human therapists, concerns arise about the dehumanization of healthcare. Although AI algorithms can detect patterns in conversations and track a patient's health, they cannot replace genuine human interactions.

Chatbots offer certain advantages, such as being available 24/7, cost-effectiveness, remote accessibility, and anonymity, which appeal to some users. However, they also face criticism for providing inaccurate advice and displaying biases due to the training data they rely on.

Despite AI's potential to bridge the gap between affordability and accessibility in mental healthcare, ethical concerns, privacy risks, data leaks, and the potential for harmful information have been raised. Experts argue that AI may not address the complex social realities that individuals seek help for, and the lack of trust in these systems persists due to human biases embedded in their creation.

Mental healthcare requires a personalized approach, and while automated quality control could help clinics meet demands, therapy cannot be a "one size fits all" solution. AI-based therapy apps like Wysa, Replika, and Woebot have emerged as potential alternatives to traditional therapy, claiming effectiveness in managing various mental health conditions. However, evidence supporting their claims remains limited, and some users find these scripted apps frustrating and demoralizing.

While AI can assist in mental healthcare, it cannot replace human therapists entirely, and careful consideration of ethical implications and limitations is necessary before integrating AI into this critical field.

After ELIZA’s scientific breakthrough in 1996, three psychiatrists wrote in The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, “Several hundred patients an hour could be handled by a computer system designed for this purpose, the human therapist, involved in the design and operation of this system, would not be replaced, but would become a much more efficient man since his efforts would no longer be limited to the one-to-one patient-therapist ratio as now exists.”

Rosalind Picard, director of MIT’s Affective Computing Research Group, speaks of technology’s heightened ability to identify and label human emotions based on their online activity, phrasing, and vocal tones, and yet falls short because “all AI systems do is respond based on a series of inputs, people interacting with the systems often find that longer conversations ultimately feel empty, sterile and superficial.”
