Manipal Hospital Doctors Counsel for Organ Donation
“The patient was a resident of Sikar and was admitted to a local hospital after a major accident. He was later referred to Manipal Hospitals, Jaipur on August 27, 2022, where he was put on a ventilator and primary treatment was done to save his life. Unfortunately, after a few hours, he was declared brain dead even after sustained efforts by the team of doctors. After we counselled the family about the patient’s condition, they took the big step of donating his heart, liver, and both kidneys. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the donor’s family for their decision to support the noble cause of organ donation,” said Dr Vaibhav Vaishnav, HOD, Critical Care Department, Manipal Hospital, Jaipur.Organ Donation Statistics in India
Patients requiring transplants and the organs available in India are far apart. Annually, 1.8 lakh patients experience renal failure, yet only 10,000 kidney transplants are performed. Approximately 2,500 to 30,000 liver transplants are carried out in India each year. Like this, only 200 people who have heart failure out of thousands receive a transplant. In the case of corneas, 25,000 eye transplants are performed annually despite demand of 1 lakh. To save more lives, it is crucial to raise awareness about organ donation.Source-Medindia
