Hearing Tests of Newborn Babies Did Not Meet Standards
In the Hutt Valley and Taupo, many newborn babies had to be recalled for another check-up after their hearing tests were found to be faulty.
Across six health boards, up to 2000 babies needed to come back for another check up after the health ministry found out that they had problems in their newborn screening system.

A boy who was just 10 months old was found to have a congenital hearing defect, and this was diagnosed only during the second hearing test.

Six health boards at Bay of Plenty, Auckland, Lakes District, Hutt Valley, Waitemata, and Canterbury admitted to faulty hearing screening tests for newborns.

Jill Lane, purchasing director of The National Health Board national services has begun an assessment of all newborn screening. Hopefully, there will be some positive action taken in this area.
