It is a slow killer that ticks away in one out of every 10 Indians. It strikes fatally every 30 seconds. These were among the facts and figures trotted out on Sunday at an event to spread awareness on World Heart Day. Gathered in front of the Victoria Statue, Cubbon Park, were officials from the Wockhardt Hospital and Heart Institute (WHHI), the City Police, and the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC).

The Commissioner of Police, H.T.Sangliana, and the Joint Commissioner of Police, J.V.Gaonkar, flagged off a Wockhardt van that will go around the City the next two days, to make people aware of habits that could lead to heart disease. Brochures and badges (on World Heart Day) were also distributed at the venue.

Meanwhile, one of the City's many and new slimming centres had a "Heart for life" offer for its visitors. VLCC with centres in Koramangala and Vasanthanagar conducted, a release said, blood tests and thyroid tests and also offered a 50 per cent discount on weight loss treatment.
