People with warning signs of heart disease are more likely to survive their hospital stay for a first heart attack.
The first heart attack (myocardial infarction) is more likely to be fatal in healthy people with fewer or no risk factors for heart disease, as compared to those with more risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, family history and diabetes; according to a new US study.Since it was an observational study based on data collected by the U.S. National Registry of Myocardial Infarction (NRMI) between 1994-2006, the researchers could not explain the reason behind the death rate and lack of risk factors. Treatments and lifestyle changes including low fat diet and exercise in patients with risk factors is a possibility that modifies their risk of dying.
The study is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
