A new study shows men who consume three or more alcoholic drinks a day are more likely to suffer a stroke. An ischemic stroke develops when an artery in the brain becomes blocked by a blood clot.

Researchers studied more than 38,000 participants for 14 years. The male participants responded to a detailed questionnaire.During the course of the study, researchers identified 412 cases of ischemic stroke among the study participants. Results of the study show men who drank three or more drinks per day, which was considered “heavy drinking,” were nearly 45-percent more likely to suffer an ischemic stroke compared to those who did not drink.

Researchers also found while light and moderate drinkers were not at a greater risk, the frequency with which they consumed alcohol modestly influenced their risk. Thus researchers say their findings directly support current public health recommendations stating that men should consume less than two drinks per day.
