Women who drink more than 15 drinks of alcohol a week may be more susceptible to mental health problem like anxiety disorder and depression.
Researchers of University of Queensland School of Population Health who had done the study said that there is a significant link between heavy drinking and smoking as well. The current research study has been the largest longitudinal study in Australia tracking mothers and their children from the prenatal stage to early adulthood. The research findings state that light drinking of alcohol; up to five drinks a week may be associated with the lowest rates of anxiety and depression in women in their early thirties. However if women take more than that number of drinks per week they may suffer from bouts of depression and stress and anxiety.
Things changed when the same association were tested for women in their twenties and forties. In them the lowest levels of poor mental health were found in those who did not drink any alcohol at all.
Scientists of the study believe that mental health in women and alcohol have a varied relationship that needs to be further probed to find out the exact reasons for the association.
