A new study published in the Student British Medical Journal revealed that more and more British, American and Canadian adults over 50 years of age are engaging in unprotected sex, leading to a drastic rise in the number of sexually transmitted diseases. Researchers led by Rachel von Simson and Dr Ranjababu Kulasegaram from King's College London and Thomas' Hospital analyzed sexually transmitted disease cases among adults over 45 years of age and found that the number of cases has more than doubled during 2000 and 2009.
In the United States, figures released by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that the number of syphilis cases rose from 885 in 2000 to more than 2,500 in 2009 while Chlamydia cases rose from 6,700 to over 19,600 during the same period.
