High Number of Youth Seeking Treatment for Drug Issues

Figures from the National Treatment Agency in the UK suggest that a record number of young people sought treatment for drug and alcohol-related issues in the year 2007-08.

The BBC reports that over 50,000 people aged under 25 sought assistance from counselors regarding their issue. However compared to the data from over two years ago, some 44% more youth faced issues related with drugs like cannabis and cocaine although heroin consumption came down during the same period.

The use of Drugs for reasons other than its prescribed recommendation, is known as Drug abuse or substance abuse. Drug abuse or substance abuse is initiated by various biological and social factors.

"We've watched the number of units of alcohol double for those who are drinking," said Prof Howard Parker, from Manchester University. "We've watched the rate of cocaine use increase right through for eight or nine years."

He believes that in most cases problems were caused by a cocktail of drugs that were consumed with alcohol in parties.

"Alcohol is cheaper and more available, cannabis is far stronger, cocaine is half the price it used to be and you can get half a dozen ecstasy tablets for £10," he added.

The National Treatment Agency said that increased investment was the reason for more people seeking treatment.
