To give a thrust to the AIDS awareness programme begun in the state, in association with Ashadeep, an NGO, Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, gave an inkling of the proposal the government had in mind regarding HIV/AIDS testing.
The Himachal Pradesh government is considering the enforcement of compulsory HIV/AIDS testing before marriage, which will help cut down rate of transmission of the disease. There was no commitment on the timeframe when the proposal is likely to be implemented.Currently, there are about 2,511 cases of HIV infection in the state with 477 chronic cases of AIDS.
Calling for the support of the public in ensuring the success of the programme, Mr. Dhumal stressed the importance of awareness about diseases and health problems as a first step before remedial measures can take over. Such issues need to be discussed at the family and village levels to ensure awareness initiatives meet its objective.
