Coughs and cold becomes synonymous with children, especially in winter season. Dr. Michael Warren of Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt University in Nashville has found a ‘natural’ solution to this problem.
Warren has found previous research that shows that buckwheat honey reduces bedtime cough symptoms in children by 47.3 percent.U.S. Food and Drug Administration has found that over-the-counter cough drugs pose more peril than benefit for children below the age of 6.
Warren says that parents often look for the “magic bullet” that would cure all the symptoms and supportive care like nasal saline spray/drops, bulb suctioning, cool mist humidifiers, fever-reducing medications, fluids are the main treatment modalities available for children with cough and cold symptoms.
He says that since these darker honeys like buckwheat honey have more phenolic compounds than other varieties, it has better antioxidant effects, which may contribute to the improvement seen in the children treated with honey.
