According to a recent study researchers say women may want to look for an alternative to HRT to help cope with their menopausal symptoms as they may be at risk of experiencing a stroke .They may be especially prone to having an ischemic stroke, which is the most common type of stroke caused by blockage of blood to the brain.

Researchers studied the health data of 39,769 HRT patients and assessed stroke risk by type, severity and outcome. Results showed HRT may be responsible for a 29-percent increased risk of stroke and may also increase the risk of stroke severity.

In conclusion researchers say hormone replacement therapy cannot be recommended for the primary or secondary prevention of stroke. Extrapolation of data suggest that patients at high risk of stroke such as those with previous stroke, coronary heart disease, or multiple vascular risk factors should stop taking it unless there is a strong contrary medical reason.
