Cumbria Tourism has outlined a new design for the elderly walker sign on roads, which will not depict a hunched couple from now onward. The new sign shows couples with straight backs and is placed at the Old Man Mountain in the Lake District.
"Life doesn't stop at a certain age and there are a lot of active visitors regularly climbing and walking here that are a world away from the image of the elderly people depicted on the existing road sign," said artist Steve Messam, who designed the new road sign. "Equally, there's a new younger generation of people getting into outdoor sports as well so it doesn't matter what age you are - there's an adventure here to have."The elderly couple in the new sign is carrying walking poles in contrast to the old sign where the man was shown leaning on a stick.
